2016 Volunteer & Corporate Volunteer of the Year Awards

On December 5th 2016, residents who braved the cold weather attended the 31st International Volunteer Day Celebration Breakfast to show appreciation to the volunteers in our community and around the world. This year the Grande Prairie Volunteer Service Bureau and sponsors presented the Volunteer of the Year Award, the Corporate Volunteer of the Year Award and the Outstanding Member of the Community Awards.

This Year’s recipients are:

VOY DebCourvoiserBrendaRicard Servus

Volunteer of the Year - Deb Courvoisie

Nominated by Art of the Peace our selection committee was unanimous in the selection of Deb Courvoisier as this year’s recipient. “Not only does Deb excel at leading a project to completion, she quietly ties up the many loose ends and final details that make a venture a success, and she does this all with grace and encouragement for every volunteer involved.” “ Her outstanding work ethic and humble “taking up the slack” make it impossible to monitor the actual amount of time Deb participate in each activity”  “Cheerleader extraordinaire, Positive energy, Tireless and enthusiastic, Dedicated volunteer and Pleasant, professional and kind“ are just a few of the accolades we received about Deb. The Volunteer of the Year Award was sponsored and presented by Servus Credit Union.

Corporate Volunteer of the Year - Unique Home Concepts

“Unique Home Concepts was nominated by Society for Support to Pregnant and Parenting Teens. They are proud supporters of many charities and non-profit boards, having given over 650 hours of volunteer time over the past year numerous hours contributed.  It is corporations such as that foster an overall sense of community within our City.” Grande Prairie is very fortunate to have businesses such as Unique Homes Concepts who give so generously back to the community. The Corporate Volunteer of the Year Award was sponsored and presented by the Prairie Mall.

CandiRadcliffeBarbBurroughs

Outstanding Member of the Community Award - Candi Radcliffe

Grande Prairie’s Not-For-Profit community would be lost without volunteers like Candi Radcliffe. She imagines herself with a glorious stack of brightly colored, haphazardly stacked hats carefully balanced atop her head. She is a whirlwind of activity who busies herself with many organizations while holding down two part-time jobs. Near and dear to her heart are Music Mondays at Swiss Chalet, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Grande Prairie Music Parents Association. Still, she finds time to clown around at the Teepee Creek Stampede, the Street Performers’ Festival, the Bear Creek Folk Festival, Finishing Touch Grad Society, the Wolverines Wheelchair Sports Assoc. and Spinal Cord Injury to name but a few. Another of the hats she wears is as a board member for the GPMPA. A truly outstanding Member of the Community, Candi Radcliffe.

wired2hire youth

Outstanding Member of the Community Award - Doug Smith

For the past 2 years, Doug Smith has been a valued volunteer instructor for the Wired 2 Hire-Youth Program, offered through the Grande Prairie Volunteer Services Bureau. He has volunteered his time and energy to teach two industry recognized certificate training courses: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) & Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG). As a volunteer instructor he taught youth between the ages of 16 – 30. He has faithfully traveled from Elmworth to Grande Prairie in all weather conditions to meet his volunteer commitments.

CountyofGPFireDept

Outstanding Member of the Community Award - Community Foundation of The County of Grande Prairie Firefighters

The County of Grande Prairie Firefighters have been very busy helping local charities through their Community Foundation, when they are not involved in their demanding duties putting out fires. Sometimes they’re up high on a roof collecting donations for Muscular Dystrophy Canada and sometimes they’re more down to earth, organizing a ”Skate With Santa” event to collect cans and boxes for the local Food Bank. They have the strength to help the QEII Foundation set up the Festival of Trees and the humility to walk a mile in red high heels to send needy children to summer camp through the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” program. They also like the individual touch of handing out Halloween candy in October or Freezies on a hot summer day.

Melanie Bell Fournier & BarbOutstanding Member of the Community Award - Melanie Bell-Fournier

Melanie Bell-Fournier is an incredible role model. Not only does she own and operate her own business, Epic Mortgage Solutions, she is a wife, mother, and Grandmother. If that was not enough Mel is also a huge advocate & sponsor of numerous sport clubs and teams in Grande Prairie and area as well as a member of various boards in our community. Mel is very involved with Rugby, hockey, football, slow pitch etc. as a competitor, cheerleader, sponsor and board member. During the winter months she is a full time “Hockey Mom” for her son. In her spare time Melanie volunteers on many boards in Grande Prairie; Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Harry Balfour Advisory committee, Suicide Prevention, PARDS, - the list truly does go on for her.

RotaryClubofGPBBQCrew

Outstanding Member of the Community Award - The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie BBQ Crew

The crew members are proud Rotarian's and volunteer their time and cooking expertise to the community. This group can be found just about anywhere there is a civic event happening. For years they have been cooking breakfast for this event, and we certainly do appreciate it. In addition they have the annual Luncheon for the Golden Age Center as well as numerous other functions throughout the year.

The GPVSB would like to congratulate this year's award winners, thank everyone who attended to celebrate International Volunteer day with us and a special thank you to our wonderful sponsors for supporting this annual event.
