Leaders of Tomorrow Presented by ATCO

“The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible, and achieve it, generation after generation.” Pearl S. Buck

The Volunteer Services Bureau takes pride in promoting this innovative and exciting program in the South Peace Region. We are pleased to be partners with our presenting sponsor, ATCO, and many other award sponsors.

About the Awards

The Leaders of Tomorrow Awards program recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to their communities through volunteerism. By recognizing these exceptional youth volunteers, the Leaders of Tomorrow Awards will inspire other students to give of themselves to benefit the region and even the world.

Individuals, community groups, educational institutions, and voluntary organizations are invited to nominate young people who deserve recognition for their devotion to helping others. Each FCSS region will recognize youth in the age categories of 13-15 years old and 15-18 years old to receive awards. Awards will be presented at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held during National Volunteer Week in April.

Each award recipient will receive a Leaders of Tomorrow Awards plaque, cash award of $100, and a $100 donation to the charity of his or her choice.

Criteria for Nominations

The Leaders of Tomorrow Awards Nominee must:

  • Exhibit dedication and excellence in any field of volunteer work including school, community, athletics, or fine arts; and
  • Inspire the spirit of volunteerism in others.

Student volunteer involvement at any level is eligible. The nominee’s activities may have taken place at any time resulting in a positive, and preferably, lasting impact.

What makes a Good Nomination Package?

Selection of award recipients is made by a vote of selection committee members.  In 2011, eight people sat on the selection committee.  They represented the presenting sponsor, ATCO, the regional participating FCSS offices, and the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Committee.  When reviewing the nomination packages, we look for things like diversity of involvement, amount of time spent volunteering, creativity of volunteerism, and how the nominee inspires the spirit of volunteerism in others.  When completing a nomination package, we suggest that you consult with your nominee to find out where else they are volunteering so that you are submitting a complete perspective of the youth's volunteer efforts.  Be sure to include letters of support for your nominee - having letters from different kinds of organizations assists the committee members to understand the scope of the youth's volunteer work.

ATCO: Presenting Sponsor of the Leaders of Tomorrow Awards

As companies with long histories in the Province of Alberta – in Grande Prairie in particular – ATCO Electric and ATCO Gas understand the value of volunteerism and its positive impacts on our quality of life.

ATCO is donating over $29,000 to Alberta charities on behalf of its employees who volunteer in their communities. Through the Volunteer Recognition Fund, employees who volunteered 50 hours or more in 2009 were eligible to apply for a $150 donation to the registered charity of their choice.  Nearly 200 ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric employees participated in the program in 2009.

ATCO Electric and ATCO Gas wish to acknowledge the work of those who give their time and effort to communities in the South Peace Region.
