The Grande Prairie Volunteer Services Bureau is working with Ryan Davis of Ryner Safety to bring this training to our office.  We welcome others who work in a similar office setting with limited exposure to hazardous materials to join us in our training.  This training will focus on limiting the risk of working with such hazardous materials as printer toners and cleaning chemicals and will allow for a question and answer period following the presentation.

About WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

WHMIS is a hazard communication system designed to ensure workers using hazardous materials, also known as controlled products, have all the necessary information to safely handle, store and dispose of these materials. Three major components of WHMIS include labels, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) and worker education. In Alberta, WHMIS requirements are outlined in the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code, Part 29, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.

As defined in the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code, employers must educate workers working with hazardous materials and workers must participate in this training. The training must address the general WHMIS requirements plus instructions on how to handle, store and dispose hazardous materials specific to each work area.

About the Facilitator

Ryan Davis is a National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO).  He has worked in the oil and gas industry (primarily pipelining) for approximately five (5) years and in Occupational Health and Safety specifically for over three (3) years.  His consulting company, Ryner Safety, has been in operation for 1.5 years, during which time he has worked as a safety consultant for Tradesmen Enterprises (facility and pipeline construction).

As an instructor, Mr. Davis is certified to teach WHMIS, TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods), and St. John's Ambulance Standard First Aid.

As an active community volunteer, Mr. Davis has graciously offered his time for this training opportunity, enabling us to offer the session for the costs of materials plus light refreshments.  Since materials will need to be ordered in advance of the training, all registrations must be completed by March 8th, and no refunds will be issued for cancellations or no-shows after this date.
